About Aguas Calientes

Aguas Calientes

Aguas Calientes is the colloquial name for Machu Picchu pueblo, a town on the Urubamba River in Peru. It is best known as the closest town to the tourist attraction Machu Picchu, which is 6km away, about 1.5 hours walk. It has many hotels and restaurants for tourists, as well as natural hot baths, which give the town its name (”hot waters” in Spanish). The baths were destroyed by floods several years ago, but have been rebuilt.

The hydro electric plant about 8km past Aguas Calientes is the end of the train line from Cusco. A few trains leave Cusco each morning to convey tourists from Cusco to Aguas Calientes to visit Machu Picchu; they are also used by local residents.

Apart from Machu Picchu, there are a number of interesting walks in the area. Putucusi, a mountain on the Urubumba river, is a popular hike and provides excellent views of Machu Picchu. It is about a 3 hour return trip with many almost vertical ladders to climb, some very high. Follow the train tracks out of Aguas Calientes towards Santa Teresa and you will see the path that will take you to the summit of Mt Putucusi.

Near the bridge to the Machu Picchu ruins you will see a stair case leading up to the railway tracks, hike down the tracks for a minute or two and you will reach an ecological centre which has some enjoyable rainforest walks. Continuing along the train tracks towards Santa Teresa you will reach the gardens of Mandor where you can hike to a small waterfall, this is private property and you pay an entry fee of less than $2.00 US.

Meditinal Water

Aguas Calientes

The outdoor thermal pools can be found 15 minutes walk out of town (follow the main street to the right of the Plaza up hill), and costs US$3 to enter. There are changing facilities, showers, luggage storage and a small cafe selling snacks, cold drinks and beer.

There are several pools of varying size and temperature including one filled with ice cold mountain water so check first before jumping in!. The springs have been recently refurbished and are good place to relax, especially after completing the Inca Trail. Open 0500-2100. Take soap and shampoo.

There are basically only 2 main streets in Aguas Calientes; Avenida Imperio de Los Incas, the street with the old train tracks running through, and Avenida Pachacutec which extends up from the Plaza to the thermal springs. You’ll find most of the town’s hotels and restaurants on these streets.

The tourist train to Cusco leaves from the new station in Aguas Calientes while the local train leaves from the old tracks running through town. For times and details check out the website www.perurail.com
