Inca City Of Machu Picchu

Fear of heights and The Inca Trail?
I travel to Peru in December and I was dying to Visit Machu Picchu, preferably by climbing The Inca Trail first. However, there is a very important problem - I have a very bad fear of heights (to the point where you have to Freak Out downstairs fire I struggle with the hanging bridges over a 15 m tall and im not big on standing near the edge of the cliff)! However, I am also a skier out as some heights of reason in that respect do not seem to bother me. I realize that it is also possible to reach Machu Picchu from Cuzco by train, but I'm willing to stay in town by myself while my travel companians follow the trail as I terrif of needlessly losing this experience! Is it possible to do The Inca Trail with bearing such of fear in the mind i dont want to get half way not only to having a panic attack and freezing???
