The beautiful natural surroundings of Machu Picchu, 2430 meters above the sea, set amongst tropical mountain forests, is extraordinary. The site is located in the middle of a saddle-shaped ridge between two mountains. Nobody knows what the Incas called their city, which adopted the name of the mountain that rises behind the ruins, Machu Picchu (literally 'old Peak'). This mountain is one of the four peaks surrounding ancient ruins, the other three Huayna Picchu, and Putukusi Pumasillo. From the center of the site, each peak points towards a specific direction, North, South, East or West. The blend of form with the natural landscape, its giant walls, terraces and ramps could easily be confused with the craggy rocks that is built. It is easy to understand why these ruins were discovered for so long, its remoteness and concealment to ensure that the Spanish were unaware of their existence. If I ever knew, probably was too inaccessible to be bothered with them. For some reason, which fortunately escaped the looting, plundering, burning and destruction that most Inca sites were submitted during the Spanish conquest. As a result, has become the most important archeological site famous in South America. It was until 1911, when an expedition led by Yale University A guy named Hiram Bingham, the Ruins Of Machu Picchu was "rediscovered". Bingham, paid a local Quechua man sun (things have not changed much since 1911), who said that on top of the hill, out of sight was an archeological ruin. Expected to be the site I was looking for, Vilcabamba (one of the last strongholds of the Inca), and they really discovered Machu Picchu purely by mistake. The site was completely covered with vegetation and, although he had been abandoned by the Incas centuries ago, a pair of peasant families living there. Most of the site is divided between the construction of terraces agricultural buildings to accommodate 500 people. Although there are a number of temples and alters the usual stone is illuminated by the sun during one of the solstices, the Most buildings are very functional which consists of not only homes but also workshops, stores and bathrooms. Built at the height of the Inca empire was probably one of the most striking urban centers, not the biggest, but certainly one of the most dramatic. Machu Picchu is an exceptionally well preserved archaeological site, some fantastic granite stones, weaving like a huge puzzle (a stone wedge angles of 34 had cut him). Anyone who has worked with granite know that not only is a very heavy stone, but also very hard and takes a great ability to cut precisely. There are 3 granite quarries on the site, which should have been working full time to provide a constant supply of stone for the construction of the city.
