someone told me that Machu Picchu is closed, most likely for good, for conservation reasons. Is this true? I can not seem to find any information that confirms this .....

Not at all, in fact yesterday in El Comercio (Peru Newspaper major) there was an article about this, how all this is a scam and now have to limit the number of people to 5,000 per day, due to the amount of trash tourists were leaving behind. Plastic bottles are not allowed in or paying a penalty of $ 100 for each item you like garbage and not leave put in the appropriate container. So no, just relax as Machu Picchu is not closed!
