Any backpacker in Peru?

I was wondering if someone could help me with a plan of what to do and where to go / stay in Peru? I will land, in Lima, but I'm not really sure where to go from here. I've been watching the bus schedules, which seem pretty cheap, but the time it takes to reach some places is considerable. I looked at the trains but they seem to work very expensive. One point of interest Is Machu Picchu, but Im not sure if I want Inca Trail, however, I heard you have to go on a trip organized to do this and must be booked 35 days in advance? Any information would be appreciated! Thanks

First, Peru is a fantastic place to travel, so you will have a blast, but please, please, please (enough?) not go anywhere long distance by train or bus. It's really worth spending the few extra dollars and get an internal flight. The Serice bus is reliable, but slow and very uncomfortable.
