In 1911, Hiram Bingham of Yale University rediscovered Machu Picchu old buried under four centuries of exuberant vegetation. Is located almost 8,000 meters high in the Andes mountains outside Cuzco, Peru, and just above the town of Aguas Calientes. This Inca site is full of mystery and nobody knows exactly how was built or why.

Scholars say that Machu Picchu was built around 1450 AD. The style of the building suggests that it is building in Late Imperial Inca period, "during the reign of Pachacuti Inca Yupanqui (or Pachacutec). According to some theories, the city existed as an administrative center to control the conquered areas and, as a military fortress. Some believe that the city was a ceremonial center in the heart of the high spiritual and earthly power. The purpose exact ancient Machu Picchu is open to debate.

Ancient Machu Picchu is an architectural wonder, there is no better example of successful civil engineering old. The huge stones that make up the site are perfectly cut and fit very well. This challenging engineering is great earthquake resistant. Its builders are considered to be one of the best stonemasters in history. Not only used techniques of dry stone construction of structures, but for agricultural terraces. They did it with big stones on tough, mountainous terrain and without the use of wheel technology.

For unknown reasons the Incas abandoned the city completely after only about 100 years. The Spanish never found the old Machu Picchu, is occupied with wars in other parts of the Inca Empire. Because the Spanish knew nothing about the place, some people believe that not many knew Incas well. It was the custom of the Incas real shelter when the Inca rulers died, so perhaps it was built over the death of Pachacutec and then forgotten. To Bingham's arrival, the city was inhabited by a small group of Quechans who found the site after the abandonment of the Inca.

To this day scientists engineers and passengers continue to be fascinated by this ancient wonder. There is a sense of peace, spiritual energy and mystery to many visitors. This city is impressive for UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the new 7 Wonders of the World. Hundreds of tourists walk the Inca Trail To Machu Picchu every day where they can appreciate a beautiful mystery of the lost Inca Empire.
