Latin America for less: Is there a particular place, which remains in his memory during his time researching the guidance of America South? Â
Neil Schlecht: Not many places and so many memorable moments, is a huge continent and extremely colorful and fascinating, with an overload spectacular places of experience. Off the top of my head, stick two recent experiences in my mind: Walk to the top of the hill in small, privately owned Suasi Island in the middle of Lake Titicaca, experiencing a surreal and fascinating sunset spreads on the sea-like lake, and driving hours on one of the dirt roads I've driven all bumpiest, white knuckles, through impressive high topography the desert to reach the end in a beautiful winery in Argentina's northern Calchaquies Valley, Salta beyond, and have a memorable birthday lunch with friends in Argentina.
But a couple of glasses of Malbec from Argentina today would provoke memories half dozen more, I'm sure.
Lafler: How would you describe the character of Latin America? Is there such a thing? What about the variations and vagaries as they travel across the continent?
NS: It's tempting, but dangerous to generalize, and I'm not sure how deeply into a subject so without writing a thesis (which would ultimately instance, thwarted by all who read it!).
Even the Spanish spoken in the South American country by country hasa innumerable shades and has many travel opportunities for the speakers, even fluent. Lafler: Can you recommend a trip to a person with only two weeks notice?
NS: My immediate advice is not always trying to do too. It is tempting to see what one can in a limited time - is certainly how I started to travel myself as a vagabond college - but often they see and experience much more slow and taking in the detail of a country (or less, a particular region!). Â Â
I concentrate regionally. Quito and the Galapagos Islands, plus an excursion into the jungle Ecuador. Cusco, Sacred Valley of the Incas, Machu Picchu, a bit of hiking and Lake Titicaca, Peru. Buenos Aires, wine country of Mendoza, Bariloche and the faster the taste of Patagonia. Â
