If you are thinking about trying The Inca Trail to Machu Picchu, but can not decide on the time of year to attend, then why not team up with the Inca festival of Inti Raymi.

Machu Picchu was an important place for sun worship during Inca times and as a civilization to be held in the sun such high esteem, can imagine that for the Incas, the winter was not a pleasant time year. It is feared that the annual disappearance of the sun: the hunger strike and to prevent this from happening would have an annual pilgrimage to Cuzco to honor the sun god and plead for His soon return. This ceremony was probably the most important Inca calendar, known as "The Inti Raymi or "Festival of the Sun.

Before the ceremony, celebrants would fast for days and refrain from any form of physical pleasure. Gifts are then submitted to the Sapa Inca, who wore a delicious feast of beer, corn bread and meat in exchange for some flames destroyed. Sacrifice flame was important to ensure fertile land and abundant crops for next year. Even today you will see many flames on The Inca Trail tour and Peruvians still hold with the highest regard for the role they have played in shaping the Inca Empire.

In 1572, the Spanish invaded Peru and banned the celebration of Inti Raymi, considering them "pagans" and not in keeping with his strict Catholic faith. However, with the hordes of tourists to Peru to attempt The Inca Trail, the event has been resurrected and now takes place in Cuzco every year on 24 June. With Cuzco as the main point of departure on the Inca Trail Machu Picchu, the event attracts its share of tourists and locals alike.

Although times have changed, the event is as authentic as they come, with parties luxurious to be a key part of the ceremony. Local take on the parts of historical figures Incas, and was asked to play Sapa Inca or his wife, is a great honor.

Like Machu Picchu has long been associated with sun worship, attending the ceremony is a great way to get an idea of the authentic rituals were carried out on the grounds of Machu Picchu from the sun during the solstices. The most important temple to the sun god, Wiracocha, was located In Machu Picchu, Inti Raymi therefore could not be a start more suitable for trekking the Inca Trail.

Although the event lasts all day highlights on the night, when piles of straw were burned in honor of Tawantinsuty, or the Empire of the four directions of the wind. Then, still partying enough, although it is more likely to be found enjoying sumptuous alpaca meat and chichi ceviche and roasted corn bread. Drinking is also a great part of these celebrations, however if you are treating the Inca Trail To Machu Picchu the next day you may want to enjoy a pisco sour
