Each one of these sites has something to recommend, if sheer size of it, such as the Great Wall and the statue of Christ Redeemer, or is the greatness, like the Taj Mahal. Other sites are revered for its historical significance while others are striking for a combination of factors.
Machu Picchu In Peru, is one of those sites. Located in the Andes, Machu Picchu, is thought to have served as a religious retreat and real property. Historians believe it was built sometime between 1460 and 1470 by Inca ruler. This ancient city contains approximately 200 buildings, most of which are residences, but also a few public buildings like temples. Most of the buildings of Machu Picchu were built with granite blocks that fit together without using mortar. This is quite surprising given the perfect fit for blocks, even today. Perhaps one of the most fascinating things about this ancient city, however, is the way the existing landscape and rock formations have been carefully integrated into the training of the city. Temples carefully sit perched on cliffs, while the sculptures were carefully carved into the formations rock.
Machu Picchu remained hidden and forgotten by the outside world following the arrival of Spanish conquistadors. It was not until 1911 that the ancient city was discovered by a professor at Yale University.
Today Machu Picchu has been carefully preserved so that modern generations can learn more about the culture old who handled both for the construction of a city so vast and fascinating.
