After Hiram Bingham discovered the Ruins Of Machu Picchu in 1911, he published a book called "The Lost City of the Incas. However, Machu Picchu was never a city at all? Did he have a government and citizens, industries and markets? Do people live, work and raise their children there? In summary, was what could be considered an urban center?
The answer seems to be no.

There is no evidence that Machu Picchu was discovered by the Spanish. Many cities were destroyed or looted by European invaders, but Machu Picchu was curiously safe. Before the conquistadors arrived in the area, a plague of smallpox devastated Machu Picchu, and abandoned real property.
